The moment I knew the world would try to move on from Jamal #Khashoggi https://wapo.st/46y8dB7 A recommended opinion piece by Karen Attiah Time named Jamal its 2018 Person of the Year, he shared it with journalists under threat - Maria Ressa, the editor of Rappler, who faced arrest and prison under Duterte; the staff of the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, targeted in a mass shooting that June; and Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, two Reuters writers then imprisoned in Myanmar. #GiftArticle #NoPaywall
@348f4b7b 2 gigantic vertical screens cycled through the “Guardian of the Truth” covers. Jamal’s came up as people danced to Michael Jackson. I watched as Jamal’s cover faded out. Minutes later, the image of MBS appeared. His April 2018 cover was the headlined, “Charm Offensive: Should the World Buy What the Crown Prince Is Selling?” I realized then that the party was a celebration of all that Time had done that year. I'd forgotten that #MBS was one of Time’s 100 most influential people in 2018.
@348f4b7b "So a murder victim and his alleged killer were shown on the same level, in the same way, both of them party props." It's not surprising that still haunts you. I'm sorry you had that experience even though it's illuminating for the rest of us. I wish I could say I was remotely surprised at how quickly and crassly the media moved on from the assassination.
