The whole idea of grit pisses me off so much! I read an essay by an educator recommending “inspiring, gritty reads” for high school students & one of them was Long Time Gone, Ismael Beah’s  memoir of being a child soldier. What he went through wasn’t gritty, it was inhuman, should never have happened. We have to stop looking for the positivity in everything. Being kidnapped into fighting a war as a child by the people who murdered your family is not a valuable developmental stage.
