I don't understand the fear of not being able to delete notes.

The Internet is just amplifying the reach of your speech. You can't delete what is posted just like you can't unspeak what you have spoken.

Yes, now there is a permanent record of what you say and everyone can see it. It is the price, and the beauty, of having the Internet megaphone.

So use it wisely. Think twice before you post.

The inability to delete has the potential to make the Internet a better place. To get rid of all the bullshit that goes around elsewhere in centralized apps.

Also, in the early years of the Internet I was told that sharing something on the Internet was like peeing in the swimming pool: once it's out, you can't take it back. I drill this into my kids EVERY day.
cc @HoppeAna Post interessante sobre a questão de apagar notas.
 Exatamente!

Pensem antes de postar que senão, depois que a mensagem espalhou pela rede, já era. 😉
 what weird analogy is that
Indeed 😀 That's why it stuck with me and that's why I use it with my kids
 😅

privacy and safety risks exist, completely understandable to me why someone would want to shore up their digital footprint.

I don't think nostr is permanent either, relays can delete your info and many will stop hosting as costs increase over time
 Just my 2 sats.

But this is pretty much how I feel about the whole delete thing. We all say stupid shit. We all make mistakes. If you can show that you've grown as a person, there's no reason to delete history to make yourself look perfect. Idiots who dredge up shit that you said five years ago. Hell, even a year ago, are numptys Trying to penalize you for someone you probably aren't anymore. The capacity for humans to grow and change is pretty damn incredible.

I'm sure there are probably good edge cases as to why somebody would want something deleted. But this is not a private centralized protocol. For better or worse nostr is public and open. Think before you speak and don't be to embarrassed if you make a mistake. Shit happens. Your human.

 I concur. Also,

*you’re
Shit, where's the delete button 😅
 That's good advice .
Hay 3 cosas que no se pueden borrar ni hacer volver atrás:
La oportunidad perdida
La bala ya disparada
Y la palabra escrita
Great advice. If you are going to post something, think it through first.

It's interesting b/c one of the discussion points around permanent content is how people can make mistakes, and how people can change their minds.

But... if a statement you make is truly important, and you change your mind or you have a new insight, isn't it valuable to demonstrate to others how we're all changing, all the time?

For some additional context, I've got teenagers. I'm petrified of them posting something online which they could regret later. Which brings me back to the start of this note. If you are going to post something, think it through first.

And to those who will respond with "self-censorship is a form of censorship."" I'm simply recommending people be thoughtful, I agree free speech is sacred, you are free to say absolutely anything you want. You just have to own it. Responsibility and accountability is on the speaker.
Whatever you think about (attempting) to delete something on internet, inability to do so is just… an inability. Its not a feature, its a bug. Its a downside. Its bad. But instead of admitting this, some people for some reason what to bend people under technology and say its good. Amazing time we live in
Some bugs are just difficult to squash, and some, like cockroaches, when you squash them, more of them come to eat the carcass, but they also survive radioactive winters, so they’re is that.

😗
I always assume that what you post online is permanently going to stay online. So think twice before pressing that arrow below the text.
I see it as more of a downgrade when I used to be able to delete things online but can’t now, and this is the future? Don’t get me wrong, I’m waiting patiently for nostr to implement this and I’ll be diving HEAD FIRST into making content on here.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with this concern. And I’m not even in a country where the government retaliates against people for speaking up or speaking out. To anyone reading this that resides in one of those countries, this post is for you!

There are MANY MANY innocent situations where deletion is necessary. Some outlined here: https://damus.io/note1l5pv64z294l9cc4jx6f92glrz3ymtc25glujy3dz9ceqc62at8asyw4gj2

My solution would be for us to have a feature like a button a user can press that can scrub their post and edit to say “post removed by user” like what I’ve seen people do during the Reddit exodus
Maybe being "live on TV" is a better analogy.

I'm a simple man. I will delete my notes if I can.
