It's mostly intentional or a byproduct of regulation mandating that all printers be forced to print nearly invisible dots to ID the make and model (and maybe even serial number) of the printer, which is why if you run out of yellow or some color, you can't print simple black text. Only a few companies meet these regs, so there is very little competition to drive things to get better.

Epson EcoTank ones are decent… though it is an older one just don’t leave it unused
The Brother laser I got has no chips on cartridges, and separate drum is great because it means compatible cartridges are way cheaper Being able to reset the cartridges very easily in case it still has a bunch left is also great
Got a 1220. Dumb as guck and connected to a cups server I only power on when I need it. Beat printer I had to print 2 pages a year.
we need more people to take them out into fields and beat them.
