"Black spruces are made to burn, filled with flammable sap and equipped with resin-filled cones that rely on fire, only opening and dropping seeds when they're heated. They're so flammable that firefighters call them "gas on a stick."

Planting neat rows of black spruces was great for the logging industry: the even spacing guaranteed that when the trees matured, they could be easily reaped, with ample space between each near-identical tree for massive shears to operate." 1/2

"The consistency between red and blue states suggests that the statistics on maternal mortality and the stories and struggles of women navigating the new normal on abortion access have penetrated the psyche of young people everywhere. The Dobbs decision, it seems, has fundamentally altered how people feel about having families and the calculus for getting pregnant."

Actually, the spokesperson said just the opposite (note bottom paragraph):

"Matthew Daley, MD, who led the ACIP's updated COVID shot working group, said the team started with a blank slate regarding whom the recommendation should target and was led by the data in making the universal recommendation it put before ACIP today.

"He noted there are serious illnesses and deaths across all age-groups, even among those who aren't in traditional risk groups."

"The calcified edifice of expensively purchased pro-monopoly precedent is hard, but it appears brittle. With our support, Ms. Khan — and her colleagues on the commission as well as Jonathan Kanter, her opposite number at the Justice Department’s antitrust division — will continue to hammer away at this yellowing old shell until it shatters."

"while it's tempting to blame Pride marchers and Burning Man pryotechnicians for the current state of affairs, it's actually the rich oligarchs and technolibertarian geniuses of Silicon Valley who can't seem to figure out how to finish a new rail line or convert some skyscrapers to condos, much less solve the homelessness crisis. Their only answers for the city's demise are lower taxes for themselves, and more cops for skid row."
