The principal ethical issue with vaccines is not about how rushed were the production and studies.
You can deliver it as fast as you want.
What you CANNOT do is
- tell people it is totally safe
- censor critical voices
- mandate it
any of which violates informed consent.

In the news recently was some paper about how there are folks who don’t have an inner voice. Everyone cried, “That’s so weird!”
Nope. It’s the folks WITH an inner voice that are weird.

Although we might imagine that it’s the most radical that experience the greatest censorship from a censorial regime, that’s not the optimal solution for the regime.
Instead, regimes tend to AMPLIFY their opposition’s radicals, as it helps make the opposition unpalatable to those on the fence.
I don’t have data on this, but it seems as if censorship throughout Covid followed this expectation:
Many of the most radical (and ridiculous) managed to survive uncensored, whereas much of the “mainstream anti-lockdowners” were deboosted, suspended or cancelled.
THEM: Thanks, but I’ll listen to the experts.
ME: Are you a scientist?
THEM: No.
ME: Well I am. So, which of us is better able to know who the experts are? And which of us is more equipped to interpret their claims, their level of confidence, and the disagreements within their community?
THEM:
ME: Me. So if you want to play the “Who’s the expert?” game — which is dumb — then I win and so STFU.

I suspect that the last thirty years of reining in antibiotic use in order to address antibiotic resistance will be looked back as unfounded and damaging, and understood as just one of the many groupthinks that the medical community suffers from.
Has many of the hallmarks of a righteous movement to save the world.
…from antibiotic resistance.
And one is willing to have one’s patient undergo local harm for the common good.
And, in such “righteous movement” circumstances, normal common sense reasoning tends to be undermined. …as you may have noticed in the Great Covid Debacle.
So, I don’t at all trust that even their argument that the inhibition on giving antibiotics is better for the general welfare.
That masks are deeply uncomfortable prima facie suggests they’re harmful.
And that absurdity made masks a BETTER membership signal.
Which evolved into a virtue signal.

Overthrowing totalitarianism and punishing those responsible isn’t a thing.
It wisps away instead, and everyone pretends they were either righteous to do what they did, or pretends they were against it all along.
Such is the bizarre authoritarianism that’s done by all to all.
My life is now categorized into
~ 2019 and prior
~ 2020 and beyond
This is involuntary, and a much larger distinction in my brain than any other temporal boundary, whether it be college, marriage, kids, etc.
Totalitarianism is a game changer for how you view life.
They routinely withheld antibiotics for respiratory viruses, a dangerous trend that has been occurring even before Covid, but far accentuated during the panic.
They refused antibiotics for my wife’s flu-like sickness in January 2020, for example, until a week later we came back in and managed to convince them. By then she lost 80% of her hearing in one ear.
Completely unsurprisingly, Hamas’ casualty data has all the hallmarks of making up shit from whole cloth.
“Most likely, the Hamas ministry settled on a daily total arbitrarily. We know this because the daily totals increase too consistently to be real. Then they assigned about 70% of the total to be women and children, splitting that amount randomly from day to day. Then they in-filled the number of men as set by the predetermined total. This explains all the data observed.”

Someone at a Kava bar I frequent found out that I’ve been vocal against Covid authoritarianism and began asking me about it, finding solace in hearing someone echo his doubts.
Someone else nearby overheard us, specifically while mentioning the number of business owners who lost their businesses.
“You all need to get some fucking proportion. They lost their business but are fucking alive! It was a worldwide pandemic for God’s sake.”
We have much work to do, folks.
Another reason we have civil liberties is because those responsible for authoritarian interventions end up going all in with their reputation, and cannot be expected to behave rationally in such circumstances.

Free expression works because each time we speak we simultaneously emotionally express, and, in doing so, we “bet” some of our reputation, moreso depending on the confidence or disdain we evince.
Reputation is a social CURRENCY, and different sociopolitical communities end up with different currencies, and their valuation depends on which community you sit within.
This, in turn, explains why opposing communities so often fail to engage with one another, as I explain in this Moment #98, from June 11, 2021.

Universities have been almost unanimously pro-authoritarian and almost unanimously anti-Israel for many decades, so it’s absolutely no surprise that any hint of a health emergency instigates massive lockstep demands for coercive interventions, and also no surprise that any drama concerning Israel instigates overwhelming groupthink condemnations of Israel.
Universities have become time bombs for stupid and evil.
Humiliation is the gas that drives free expression and the slow slog toward truth.

Went to a comedy show in Miami and the host asked where everyone’s from.
When she asked “Who’s from Miami?” much of the audience raised their hands.
But then she said, “And NOT those who moved here because of Covid!” …and practically everyone lowered their hand.
Covid’s Run, the perfect world of pandemic pleasure, with just one catch: you were ousted from society if unvaccinated.

As I said of any community which not only has self-inmolaters, but proudly supports them, they’re itching to engage in “justified genocide” themselves. Here is Aaron Bushnell on Reddit:
https://m.primal.net/Hfsx.jpg
A sociopolitical community that not only self-immolates, but proudly embraces the self-immolaters, is ready to finish the genocidal job that Hamas started.
Beware the side embracing self-immolation. Moment 462

Aaron Bushnell WAS morally outraged. That is undeniable.
He is part of a massive irrational worldwide anti-Semitic moral panic that erupted and was energized by the wake of the 10/7 massacre, NOT by the Israeli subsequent response.
A mass hysteria whose members are willing to suicide by fire are not far from finishing the job Hamas aims to do.
Most people imagine that the most nightmarish governments are authoritarian ones where the state endeavors to monitor your every move, threatens to fine, arrest, or even execute you for resisting.
But there is a much worse hell on Earth, one where the government doesn’t even attempt to monitor you or bother to threaten you with penalties or physical coercion because nearly every civilian is loudly and proudly berating and demeaning anyone showing insufficient zeal for the righteous movement.
No sharp tips or bullets needed. But coercion it is, yet infinitely easier for the masses to convince themselves that they have engaged in no coercion, and that freedom still reigns.
This is why the great horror of totalitarianism can be so invisible to so many.
A PERSONAL EUREKA MOMENT ON SUGARS AND BEING LIMBER
Over the last four or five years I have acquired pain in my knees, inner hip joint, ankles, and more generally am much slower to heal than I used to be. I could barely jog any longer, and many CrossFit movements — and real life movements — were becoming excruciating.
Independently I noticed I was having the standard signs of high blood sugar in spite of being on a low carb diet anyhow. I am in my 50s, and it makes sense that my insulin production ain’t what it used to be.
At first I didn’t connect the two, but after a few months of noticing the high sugar signs it occurred to me that perhaps they’re related.
I hypothesized that even mild chronic excess sugars can lead to less efficient capillary circulation.
And, I reasoned, the first parts of the body to experience trouble with poor circulation should be the least perfused parts.
That in fact was the case for me: all my pains were in my tendons. Not joints per se, not muscles, not nerves. All from tendons, which are inherently poorly perfused.
So, at Christmas I decided to do an experiment.
I drastically cut my carbs & fruits almost entirely (like, to one strawberry per day). And even my usual meals were split and eaten in two parts separated by several hours, the idea being that it’s not about the total sugars per day, but about keeping them at all times within what my pancreas can accommodate.
Within even two weeks the pain in my tendons was at 30% of what it had been.
Now, two months in, the pains are almost entirely gone. I am now the lithe and limber athlete I used to be. I had begun to feel old due to the pain, despite being very in shape. The “release” from what I initially took to be “getting older” has been exhilarating!
And it should only improve, because I suspect these injured tendons are still in the months-long process of healing.
I’m a scientist, not a medical doctor, so perhaps this is all now well appreciated in medicine. (Supposing my hypothesis is right at all!)
But I do not think it is well appreciated among us laymen the extent to which sugars and carbs over time deteriorate us. It first hits your low-perfused spots, but later everywhere. And that includes your heart, your organs, your genitalia and sex life, and of course your brain.
[An added advantage is that I lost ten pounds, and, for example, my six pack kinda sorta is beginning to show (although it’s at best a two pack).
I also found that changing one’s diet for athletic mobility was so much more motivating than for aesthetics.]
The world went so crazy in 2020 that I had to put together a movie on the many obvious — and sometimes complex and subtle — reasons for why uncovered human faces are important.

The medical world treated Covid — which is mild! — like the fucking plague, refusing to treat Covid patients until the entire kitchen sink of useless PPE was in place:
“If a patient with suspected covid- 19 is in cardiac arrest they should be given cardiac compressions and be ventilated only if they are in the emergency department and the person attending them is wearing aerosol generating procedures (AGP) PPE. That means wearing an FFP3 mask, full gown with long sleeves, gloves, and eye protection.
The advice rests on the premise that performing cardiac compressions risks virus particles being released into the air that could infect staff.
In an email to staff, Nick Crombie, associate medical director and trauma anaesthetist at the trust, acknowledged that there was unease about the new policy. But he said that the covid-19 pandemic was a major situation that required action that would be unthinkable in different circumstances.
"Every patient we see could potentially not only harm us but, remotely, our families. In this situation, we are the front line and we have to get into the mindset of putting our own safety first. We HAVE to be safe," he wrote. "This is not about lack of PPE or money." “

On June 1, 2021, Moment 90 of my Science Moment series dropped, and it was about how free speech goes WAY beyond the First Amendment.
At the time, it was clear that although the Feds had a hand in censoring us, the entire culture was pushing for Big Tech to censor anti-lockdown narratives.
Free speech might as well be dead if we have an intolerant culture demanding that private companies censor everyone.
Here I made the case against Big Tech social media censoring us EVEN IF they’re working independently of the State.

For hypotheses about “some completely novel thing,” it’s usually the case that there’s an existing narrative about what that thing would be like were it to exist.
Observations are then cherry-picked that seem to support the existence of that expected thing.
But because the thing doesn’t actually exist, the data are at best highly ambiguous, unclear, ambiguous.
For example, the thing might be
- Big Foot
- UFOs
- Covid
- Climate change
All have the hallmarks of this. We find the “data” backing exactly what we expect such a non-existent thing to be like, and the data are inherently poor.
Cultures seem to select for the constant acquisition of “evidence” for such chimeras.
The varieties of pandemic preparedness plans amounted to springs set to activate and “help” if there was a pandemic.
To the extent those plans were followed, they obliterated civil liberties and had massive harms.
But in most cases governments reacted with interventions going far BEYOND even those hubristic pandemic plans.
And — this is not often discussed — the existence of those plans almost surely contributed to the illusion of a pandemic. Just as hammers see nails everywhere, the infrastructures constructed to save us if there ever were a pandemic are disproportionately likely to suffer from an illusion of a pandemic. They want to save us. And they certainly don’t want to be remembered for NOT saving us when they were charged with that righteous task.
So…
Plandemic preparedness plans, if they are to exist at all, must
(1) be steeped in the complex cost-benefit trade-offs of living and breathing societies,
(2) possess an overarching humility about their ability to possibly master plan anything
(3) not violate civil liberties [THIS is the most important of all]
(4) learn that the dangers from mass hysteria and social division — such as targeting the evil unclean out group — can be much more severe than the dangers from the emergency itself
(5) realize that they themselves are uniquely biased in their ability to recognize whether or not a pandemic (or any emergency) is actually occurring.
The folks involved in such “emergency planning” infrastructure are, however, invariably far Left, have the hubris that they can master plan economies and the truth, don’t view civil liberties as a constraint, have childish models of how society will respond to their policies, and have zero insight into the bias peculiar to their situation.
