@bb052609 in your discussion of bully, you didn't mention bully pulpit, a phrase of surprisingly recent origin. According to etymology online, it was coined by Teddy Roosevelt but really came into its own in the 1980s
@bb052609 The case conundrum of modern pronouns: translating Hickam's Dictum, "A man can have as many diseases as he pleases" to gender neutral pronouns, "A patient can have as many diseases as they please", creates an odd situation where "they" is both singular (a patient) and plural (they please). Using "patients can have" solves the grammar but misses the point that one patient can have multiple problems, and "they pleases" just sounds odd. Suggestions?
