@bb052609 The case conundrum of modern pronouns: translating Hickam's Dictum, "A man can have as many diseases as he pleases" to gender neutral pronouns, "A patient can have as many diseases as they please", creates an odd situation where "they" is both singular (a patient) and plural (they please). Using "patients can have" solves the grammar but misses the point that one patient can have multiple problems, and "they pleases" just sounds odd. Suggestions?
@cc5dcdba I rarely suggest "one" as a replacement for "he," but it could be an option in this case, where you want to preserve the strong feeling of singularity and the tone is also a bit highbrow: "One can have as many diseases as one pleases"?
