I admire that someone made a site in 18 different languages telling people that the first message of a chat conversation should include the thing you're making contact about, not just typing hello, waiting for the recipient to respond then making the recipient wait for you to type. I wholeheartedly agree.

Today's piece of obscure trivia: There's an Indonesian city whose name Singaraja means Lion King.

It's not even the only city named after lions in South East Asia (where there are no lions in the wild) Singapore means Lion City

@7a7e3e36 @30ce86c6 I recently came back from Singapore where they mandate incorporating green spaces into the city. Its amazing what they’ve achieved and how it improves the city. 1st picture is the airport, 2nd picture is publicly accessible space on level 50 of a skyscraper

@1b2be89d @30ce86c6 you’d think it would be a common thing. One of the reasons financial services companies often force people to use their leave is frauds become more apparent when people aren’t logging in doing what they need to do to keep the cover up going
I’m off to the Melbourne Royal Show today. What started 175 years as a way for rural folk to gather and show off what they produced to city folk has grown into an unhinged extravaganza that’s parts theme park, petting zoo, food fair, agricultural trade expo, music festival, craft show and market for products usually only found on infomercials. Despite it being kind of expensive and sometimes tacky I love it because it’s such a feverdream of an event.

I’ll be posting the weird and wonderful things I find in this thread. To start with, here’s some well behaved cows

One ways Mastodon is like earlier internets that I most appreciate is there is so many cats and their humans are mostly just sharing the joy of cat rather than trying to make them into influencers/celebrities/brand deal magnets

It made me so happy to visit one of my favourite places in the world this week, Singapore’s Pulau Ubin. This little island is only 3km away from one of the world’s busiest and most futuristic airports but it feels like another world. When most of Singapore rapidly modernised, this little community between the beach and jungle held onto the relaxed rhythms of village life. You still can’t drink the tap water. Friendly cats wander through the little cafes where you might be served chicken grown on the island or fish caught nearby and cannot pay by credit card. The boats to get there run when enough people show up and the taxi service is some old guys with an old van that probably wouldn’t be allowed on the mainland. A few minutes walk out of the village and you’re in beautiful jungle and mangroves with beautiful butterflies fluttering by. It’s the perfect soul nourishing escape from big city life.

Something I think has been massively under communicated to the detriment of the #voicetoparliament Yes campaign is that this is something that this was born out of the extensive work and consultation among Indigenous people as part of the process leading to the Uluru Statement From The Heart. I’m guessing most Australians are probably assuming it’s just something a white politician thought was a good idea
