I'd argue the reason excessive drinking, drug abuse, and actual abuse are all results of someone not being able to healthily express their emotions out to another person.

To go "never open up to other people" is bad and possibly dangerous advice, because if you're in a state of crisis and no one knows, then no one can try and help you
