Hanson et al, ‘The strain on scientific publishing’
2016: 1.9 million articles
2022: 2.8 million articles
‘Scientists are increasingly overwhelmed by the volume of articles being published... in 2022 the article total was 47% higher than in 2016, which has outpaced the limited growth, if any, in the number of practising scientists. Thus, publication workload per scientist (writing, reviewing, editing) has increased dramatically.’

Netherlands Institute for Human Rights, the non-discrimination authority: The Tax Authority is guilty of indirect discrimination in the childcare benefits affair. This emerges from the first three cases of parents investigated by the Institute and tested against the General Equal Treatment Act. The verdict is three times: prohibited indirect discrimination on grounds of ethnicity. https://www.mensenrechten.nl/actueel/nieuws/2023/10/2/toeslagen-oordelen #discrimination #bias #law #politics #netherlands
‘De Belastingdienst/Toeslagen heeft zich schuldig gemaakt aan indirecte discriminatie in de kinderopvangtoeslagaffaire. Dit blijkt uit de eerste 3 zaken van zogenoemde ‘toeslagenouders’ die het College voor de Rechten van de Mens heeft onderzocht en getoetst aan de Algemene Wet Gelijke Behandeling. Het oordeel luidt 3 keer: verboden indirect onderscheid op grond van ras.’

‘Say you search for “children’s clothing.” Google converts it, without your knowledge, to a search for “NIKOLAI-brand kidswear,” making a behind-the-scenes substitution of your actual query with a different query that just happens to generate more money for the company, and will generate results you weren’t searching for at all.’

Dutch dating app Breeze asked the non-discrimination regulator, the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights, whether they should be allowed to adjust their algorithm so that people with dark skin and of non-Dutch origin are introduced to other users as often as people with light skin and of Dutch origin. The regulator says: the adjustment is not only allowed, it is required. https://www.mensenrechten.nl/actueel/nieuws/2023/09/06/dating-app-breeze-mag-en-moet-algoritme-aanpassen-om-discriminatie-te-voorkomen #law #tech #ai #discrimination #humanrights #gdpr #bias #netherlands

This was done despite internal doubts about the legality of this and the "origin, accuracy and timeliness" of the stored data.’
