It's a public holiday and I'm home. I was too exhausted to finish the article last night so it's a working day for me. But hey, I get to work in at-home clothes so that's alright.
Determined to submit by this evening.

Fellow writers, shaming other writers for writing intimate scenes or trying to run them down for doing so is kind of reprehensible. Writing those scenes is incredibly hard for some of us and we have to do very specific research before deciding what to leave out and what to imply.
But I get if you want to score cheap points for some one-upmanship game.
But that story of mine still got an honorable mention in Gardner Dozois's last anthology, so here's an eyeroll for you.
(happily blocked and I shall participate in that hashtag no more. I've no time for these silly little shenanigans)
I remember this one time an editor of mine told me I needed to write a better kissing scene. I crowdfunded that research on that avian site, asking people for the most famous movie kisses they could think of. I compiled a list, watched those youtube videos several times, analysed head positions and body language. Then I wrote three sentences to imply rather than explicate. This is what I'm talking about.

What's the strangest research you've done for your writing.
Umm... *looks around*
1. Bondage for a story with an enby character who happened to be a sub with a very very specific kink? (maybe some day I'll tell the tale of the bloke who read that story and thought I might be a sub with that specific kink, hahaha sorry no bro I am not that exciting and am vanilla AF).
2.tentacle pr0n for another story when the love interest is an alien?
3. Various things about body horror and supernatural mutilations but my primary research interest is Gothic so that's kind of expected, right.

It's Malaysia Day (the day of the formation of our nation -- both East and West Malaysia and the usage of the name). I woke up to first a message from a scholar I've cited and whose research I admire (many squees), and a mass-form rejection for the other grant I applied for this year (I was expecting this). I feel the good far outweighs the bad because it reminds me of my commitment NOT to apply for anymore grants in the next two years and to focus on what matters. My research writing and my monograph. Keeping the faith that what I do matters, here. #academiclife #academicchatter #litodons
