Bullbuster, a.k.a. Mecha Operations [as Defined in the Act on Non-Road Vehicles’s Article 3 and the Ministerial Order for the Regulation of Special Upright Heavy Vehicles’s Article 2 Section 5] in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) [as Defined in the Basic Act on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Article 2]

Have you ever asked yourself what a world in which mecha were a part of ordinary life would look like? Fans of Japanese small business and normalized mecha world-building are in for a treat. Brash young mech designer and demonstration pilot Tetsuro Okino of the Kanie Corporation is seconded, along with the brand new mech he developed, to Namidome Industries, a struggling “pest control” company contracted to protect an evacuated island’s abandoned settlements against mysterious monsters.

In this first episode, I found the characters charming, the world interesting, and appreciated the straight-laced treatment of the conceit that monster fighting might end up being just another dirty, dangerous job done with heavy machinery.

Whether Bullbuster can keep its balance in the next few episodes remains to be seen, but for now I can happily recommend it to the curious.

“16bit Sensation”, a.k.a. “Lamentations On Decay Followed By Pointed Shots of Gatcha (We Told Aniplex It Was Product Placement): The First Episode”

If you’re willing to Put In The Work to climb the ladder and give it all for your galge-making dreams you’ve got a pretty good shot, just like anyone else in 1992. Eh, what’s that? It’s 2023? Oh. Well. Guess all we’ve got to offer you is an eat-your-neighbors-then-watch-megacorpo-gatcha-take-everything-anyway social media attention economy instead. Don’t give me that look, now – I don’t make the fuckin’ rules.

Awfully considerate of Aniplex to fund an anime just for me and mine, but will anyone else enjoy it? Subject matter and direct references aside, this episode seemed to have been most particularly packed to the gills with certain things that’ll slip by those who weren’t able to witness what’s now all but lost – you noticed the games but did you notice the shelves they’re on? I will not explain further – so that it avoided slipping into nostalgia is nothing short of remarkable.

Anyway, after accidentally passing a short interview with a disguised divine our girl is given the opportunity she prayed for. I’m sure it’s of no significance that she had to be slipped back to 1992 to get it, ha ha, just a wacky way to give a modern audience a point of reference in a story about the past, ha ha.

I said I was cautiously hopeful about this adaptation in spite of its changes from the original series of doujinshi, and after this first episode that hope remains intact.
