Bullbuster, a.k.a. Mecha Operations [as Defined in the Act on Non-Road Vehicles’s Article 3 and the Ministerial Order for the Regulation of Special Upright Heavy Vehicles’s Article 2 Section 5] in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) [as Defined in the Basic Act on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, Article 2]

Have you ever asked yourself what a world in which mecha were a part of ordinary life would look like? Fans of Japanese small business and normalized mecha world-building are in for a treat. Brash young mech designer and demonstration pilot Tetsuro Okino of the Kanie Corporation is seconded, along with the brand new mech he developed, to Namidome Industries, a struggling “pest control” company contracted to protect an evacuated island’s abandoned settlements against mysterious monsters.

In this first episode, I found the characters charming, the world interesting, and appreciated the straight-laced treatment of the conceit that monster fighting might end up being just another dirty, dangerous job done with heavy machinery.

Whether Bullbuster can keep its balance in the next few episodes remains to be seen, but for now I can happily recommend it to the curious.
