Pondering something. Instead of ordering new servers to replace the 6 year old database servers, how about just replacing the hard drives with SSDs?
The server CPUs are adequate (2x 10 core Xeons), and they have 384GB of RAM. It's the hard drives that are the primary bottleneck. And the biggest worry about old hardware is the drives wearing out. Swapping the HDDs for SSDs would solve both, and for a fraction of the cost.
