You'll see that our free, all-day conference at Northeastern, "What Works: The Future of Local News," is "sold out." Please register anyway. People will be coming in and out all day, and anyone who adds their name to the waitlist should have no problem getting in. It's this Friday, March 15. #journalism #LocalNews https://www.eventbrite.com/e/what-works-the-future-of-local-news-tickets-820184533017?aff=ebdshpsearchautocomplete
The infighting is so fierce because the stakes are so small: far-right talk-show host, Jeff Kuhner, embroiled in a feud with Howie Carr, calls for a boycott of the Boston Herald (via Contrarian Boston). #mapoli https://www.bostonbroadside.com/massgop/boycottherald/

@9bf0c0a4 I actually care less about the size of the audience than I do about who's still on X/Twitter. The Mass. political and media community is almost exclusively still on Twitter, as are the people and organizations studying the future of local news, which is my research area. Just in terms of numbers, Mastodon has plenty of people, and I find engagement here to be excellent.

@209840d8 It's crap. Very few of the tech platforms have clean hands. Mastodon is probably the only one, but it only meets some of my professional and academic needs.
New at Media Nation: X/Twitter may be terrible, but it's still the go-to place for certain types of conversations. https://dankennedy.net/2023/10/07/x-twitter-may-be-terrible-but-its-still-the-go-to-place-for-certain-types-of-conversations/

@7390567d Yeah, but no breakdowns, delays or fires.
Worth noting: My commute on the #MBTA today (commuter rail and Orange Line) was exceptionally smooth and comfortable. It was like the good old days. #MaPoli
On behalf of the American people, I’d like to apologize to Jerome Powell for keeping the economy strong and growing. Please don’t punish us.
Why are our local media united in referring to the #MaPoli tax cuts as "tax relief"? It's an unnecessary package, mainly skewed toward the rich, that will offset the ballot question we just passed to try to meet some real needs in schools, transportation and social services.

Like Justice Ginsburg before her, Sen. Dianne Feinstein spent her final months hounded by a mob even though we all know that a senator can get by on staff work. People seem to have laid off McConnell, as they should, but the treatment Feinstein got is reserved for — surprise! — women.
I updated Safari for Mac to 17.0 yesterday, and it's choked twice today, forcing me to restart. (Just Safari, not my Mac.) I violated my own rule: Always wait for x.1.

@945cfea1 @f8d9bc1c I take several long walks a week and like long podcasts to go with them. Podcasts fit very well with my media consumption habits. Everyone's mileage varies. But I also have no patience for videos, even short ones.
The Colorado Sun, one of the projects that Ellen Clegg and I profile in our forthcoming book "What Works in Community News," wins seven first-place awards from the Colorado Press Association. Kind of awe-inspiring to watch Jann Wenner cluelessly stumble into his undoing. He seems vaguely aware that it's not going well, but he quickly recovers to unleash his bloated ego on other topics. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/15/arts/jann-wenner-the-masters-interview.html
“Meet the Press" is a prestigious enough program that they might have been able to land Joe Biden for Kristen Welker's debut. Now, I don't know if they tried. But to lead with Trump sends all the wrong messages about values. I'm not saying they should *never* interview Trump, but it's a mistake to make him the debut guest. #journalism
Texas and Florida were on the verge of flipping Blue. By driving out Blue voters, Republicans might lose a few House seats, but they'll keep their two Senate seats apiece and solidify their power. When critics warn that academics, doctors and other educated professionals will leave, Abbott’s and DeSantis’s reaction is: Good riddance.

Not quite sure what @7fabca08 is arguing for. Twitter has had public lists you can subscribe to for years. They’re not algorithmic, but that’s OK. She praises Bluesky’s feeds, but you need an engineering degree to write one. I do wish Mastodon had public lists. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/17/opinion/social-media-algorithm-choice.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
@5f8707f8 @64958c5f I don’t have a Ring camera and don’t want one, but I could see the value with different defaults. No way do I want to share footage with my neighbors and police without making a conscious choice.

@1002c64f It would be in a subpoena, and the police apparently broke federal law by not bothering to get one.
