The infighting is so fierce because the stakes are so small: far-right talk-show host, Jeff Kuhner, embroiled in a feud with Howie Carr, calls for a boycott of the Boston Herald (via Contrarian Boston). #mapoli https://www.bostonbroadside.com/massgop/boycottherald/
@fed5c88f There were a few years when the Post's political coverage was tougher and more dedicated to truth-telling that the Times’. Do you think that's still the case?
@9bf0c0a4 I actually care less about the size of the audience than I do about who's still on X/Twitter. The Mass. political and media community is almost exclusively still on Twitter, as are the people and organizations studying the future of local news, which is my research area. Just in terms of numbers, Mastodon has plenty of people, and I find engagement here to be excellent.
@209840d8 It's crap. Very few of the tech platforms have clean hands. Mastodon is probably the only one, but it only meets some of my professional and academic needs.
Worth noting: My commute on the #MBTA today (commuter rail and Orange Line) was exceptionally smooth and comfortable. It was like the good old days. #MaPoli
Why are our local media united in referring to the #MaPoli tax cuts as "tax relief"? It's an unnecessary package, mainly skewed toward the rich, that will offset the ballot question we just passed to try to meet some real needs in schools, transportation and social services.
Congratulations to Bill Ketter, who has won the Wells Memorial Key, the Society of Professional Journalists' highest honor. #LocalNews #journalism https://www.spj.org/news.asp?ref=2975
Like Justice Ginsburg before her, Sen. Dianne Feinstein spent her final months hounded by a mob even though we all know that a senator can get by on staff work. People seem to have laid off McConnell, as they should, but the treatment Feinstein got is reserved for — surprise! — women.
I updated Safari for Mac to 17.0 yesterday, and it's choked twice today, forcing me to restart. (Just Safari, not my Mac.) I violated my own rule: Always wait for x.1.
@945cfea1@f8d9bc1c I take several long walks a week and like long podcasts to go with them. Podcasts fit very well with my media consumption habits. Everyone's mileage varies. But I also have no patience for videos, even short ones.
“Meet the Press" is a prestigious enough program that they might have been able to land Joe Biden for Kristen Welker's debut. Now, I don't know if they tried. But to lead with Trump sends all the wrong messages about values. I'm not saying they should *never* interview Trump, but it's a mistake to make him the debut guest. #journalism
Texas and Florida were on the verge of flipping Blue. By driving out Blue voters, Republicans might lose a few House seats, but they'll keep their two Senate seats apiece and solidify their power. When critics warn that academics, doctors and other educated professionals will leave, Abbott’s and DeSantis’s reaction is: Good riddance.

Interesting day on social media that served as a reminder that there are still some important conversations that are only taking place on X/Twitter. I wish it were otherwise, but that's the reality.
Drastic newsroom cuts at Gannett have left its newspapers without the capacity to meet the news and information needs of its communities. But they can find it in their budget to hire ... yes, a Taylor Swift reporter. #LocalNews #journalism https://us231.dayforcehcm.com/CandidatePortal/en-US/gannett/Posting/View/63544
Public radio stations have got to stop posting their audio stories without adding a text version or at least a transcription. I’m on the subway. I know it’s more work, and work = money, but what they’re doing is worthless. #journalism
Good Lord. Is this even an issue? I remember @e6b06cd1 writing about a famous instance 25 years ago, but I thought we’d gotten over that. #journalism https://www.poynter.org/
@5f8707f8@64958c5f I don’t have a Ring camera and don’t want one, but I could see the value with different defaults. No way do I want to share footage with my neighbors and police without making a conscious choice.
