@0c1a9324@1eccc0f8 indeed the two movements feel related but different, also "Trumpism" I worry is a gloss to avoid naming growing fascism.
Miriam Cates is the example giving me the most fear of something similar growing in the UK, and a lot of the anti-trans/anti-abortion stuff occurring here is using resources and ideas from the US but still a different flavour.
As you say its being kept quiet for fear of losing votes, being loudly religious in the UK seems a vote loser (currently).
@1eccc0f8 I'm not really sure about using "Trumpism" to suggest that this resurgence in right wing populism with fascist overtones is something new when it feels like mostly the same old stuff repackaged.
Some of the religious overtones of the US/UK current right seem quite different which seems to change a lot of things, but the way they claim most people secretly agree with them and including of conspiracy theories rings true as a parallel definitely.
@0c1a9324@54b144c3 what fresh horrors I will turn my gaze upon. My third eye looking ever inwards to the darkness at the heart of these isles.
But also yeah I can see it giving a potential for snacky bureaucratic horror.
I must say on the political snark front reading "The Home Secretary isn't on the guest list - she's probably at home in her burrow, laying eggs in a paralysed illegal immigrant or something" I felt spoilt for choice about who was being parodied from the last decade.
@54b144c3@0c1a9324 quite possibly and I've likely forgotten. I read up to The Nightmare Stacks and then took a long multiyear break for some reason, then this year I finally went "Oh yeah shit I should go back" and just finished The Delirium Brief which was a lot of fun.
Time will tell if I keep going or get distracted again before returning to the next one, I am currently spoilt for excellent book choices which is the situation we should all aim to be in I guess.
Got reminded of Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol (HTCPCP/1.0) (https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2324) and how I actually have some servers that return "418 I'M A TEAPOT" when not serving data the way you've contacted them.
Then I thought about Charlie Stross's (@0c1a9324) Laundry novels and the implication of having servers all shout I'M A TEAPOT into the void in unison whenever they deny you something.
Are... are we invoking something we shouldn't?
