@43d7c4ea I'm still not sure of the mechanism here, if private landlords are selling up, what happens to these properties, either it's bought by another landlord and is available for rent, or it's bought by someone who wants to live there and so, no longer needs a rental property ?
As a general principal, I would expect if large rental firms get a significant share of the market this will lead to an effective cartel that is bad for renters.
@43d7c4ea I feel that part of the problem the #Tories have, is that their Covid policies may have caused the deaths of many elderly voters many of whom would have voted Conservative.
I'm #cynical enough to wonder if abolishing IHT (which Labour would be likely to re-introduce) might indirectly lead to a spike in deaths of rich elderly Conservative voters !
@43d7c4ea While it's an unpopular thing to say, I think population control is also needed. We can either control birth rates now (and start on solutions for caring for an aging population), or wait for mass starvation as major crops fail. Of those two reducing birth rates is the better solution.
@43d7c4ea Perhaps we should give up on inheritance tax, and just consider inherited money/property etc. as a capital gain, and tax according to CGT rules ?
@43d7c4ea It just feels like part of the Conservative attitude of lords in the castles, serfs in the fields, but we now live in an age of technology, and without a large pool of highly educated people we're never going to be able to compete with countries that do value education for all.
@43d7c4ea As a random thought, if CGT on an inherited property was only paid (on the difference between the last purchase and the sale price) would this then encourage people to rent out the (probably unmortgaged) property cheaper than if it was sold to pay IHT and then bought with a mortgage and rented to someone who pays the mortgage interest indirectly via the landlord ...
