Notes by Kees van der Leun | export

Often we don't get to see this news anymore. Sometimes we ignore it. But it's happening every week, in Europe.

The EU needs to stop exports of components for weapons 'to Central-Asia', which end up in Russia and its arms industry, and then on Ukrainian citizens.

The @IEA Net Zero Roadmap released last week foresees an important role for hydrogen, in shipping, aviation, the power sector, road transport, and heavy industry.
Roughly 400 Mt/year = 13,000 TWh (LHV).

If that should all be green hydrogen, it would take 20,000 TWh of renewable electricity by 2050. That's around 2/3 of current global electricity production next to an increased direct electricity demand!

September 2023 was the warmest September on record globally, with an average surface air temperature of 16.38°C, 0.93°C above the 1991-2020 average for September and 0.5°C above the temperature of the previous warmest September, in 2020.

Car sales in oil & gas country Norway.
Battery electric cars take s market share of 83%, so far this year. Gasoline and diesel down to 4% together.

Well, that is surprising! Dutch candidate to become EU Climate Commissioner, not known for his firm climate standpoints so far, just committed to a 90%(!) emission reduction target for 2040 in his hearing in the European Parliament. Would be a big step following the -57% target for 2030.

So far, the highest October temperature ever recorded in Spain was 37.5⁰C (in 2014).
Today, it was 38.2⁰C in Montoro, near Córdoba, and 38.0⁰ in Badajoz, at the border with Portugal.

A server called mostr.pub here hosts this kind of X-like accounts. Blocking this one, of course.

If climate scientists say the current global warming spike is within what they expected, while for many people this is not the case, then many people hadn't grasped what to expect.
Thanks to climate denial campaigns, governments afraid or unwilling to communicate the urgency, Murdoch media, and - probably - the fact that many people preferred not to hear the disruptive predictions.

Today, it's New York City: State of emergency declared over flash flooding - unprecedented 200 mm of rain in a day at JFK airport.

Switzerland’s glaciers lose ‘mind-blowing’ 10% of their total ice volume in just two years!
Disastrous.

"The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist."

Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism, 1951

Still relevant today.
 Today, it's Capetown, South Africa.
"The rains, which came just a week after larger-than-normal spring tides and earlier deluges, closed major routes into Cape Town, a city of 4 million people, and damaged wheat crops, bridges, other infrastructure."

@c92f5433 Take the train to Brussels, board the plane there.
There's a direct train connection between Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Brussels (200 km, 1.5 hours by Thalys).
And still, @klm operates 4 return flights Amsterdam-Brussels today.

Yes, these flights are probably mostly used by transfer passengers, traveling to Brussels via Amsterdam etc. But they should take the train too..
Quote from a @PepsiCo executive in @PeterGleick's The Three Ages of Water:
"The biggest enemy is tap water . . . We're not against water-- it just has its place. We think it's good for irrigation and cooking."

Last time @5b1752c6 presented the weather forecast on NOS public TV news. He often explained the climate change background to weather events, and now he's off to reduce emissions with his own company. Thanks and all the best, Gerrit!

EU Renewable Energy Directive approved by large majority in Parliament. 42.5% renewables in all final energy consumption, and a much higher share in electricity by 2030, just 7 years from now.
Implementation will be a massive effort, but worthwhile.

Derna, before and after the flood. I think the 3 buildings on the Mediterranean coast, left of the river, can be recognized in both pictures. A lot of buildings simply don't exist anymore.

Dutch government invests €500 million in regional distribution grid company @Stedin, becoming a shareholder next to 42 municipalities. The additional equity was needed to finance the grid expansion needed for the energy transition.

This afternoon, the temperature at the Netherlands' main meteorological station De Bilt reached 30⁰C.
This was only the 7th time this has happened in September, in the 1901-2023 record: twice before 2013, five times since then.

158 mm of rain within 1 hour; the highest hourly rainfall in its 139-year record!
