Can somebody explain why Tether guys are so obsessed with their Keet project? Keet doesn't seem to be a big deal to me. Am I missing something?

P.S. and what happened to all their promises to implement stable coins over lightning?
Keet IS A big deal. Hypercore is a new protocol for establishing connections DIRECTLY p2p. Takes awhile for others to recognize the step function change it allows and how to implement it. Over using the old lindy stuff. nostr:nprofile1qqstnem9g6aqv3tw6vqaneftcj06frns56lj9q470gdww228vysz8hqpz4mhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejqzrthwden5te0dehhxtnvdakqz9rhwden5te0wfjkccte9ejxzmt4wvhxjmcjgxv3n can definitely talk more in depth about it and has a pod feed dedicated to it in the 🍐 pear report.
I'm straggling to understand how it's a big deal. I might be mistaken but, a) hypercore is not that new and was re-branded at least once if I remember correctly b) various holepunching techniques existed since at least early 2000s and were used extensively for example by skype already back then c) DHT which is a part of the story is also not a new thing and has been used by bittorrent for decades already (which has been a big deal btw).

I don't have anything against keet per-se. I'm just confused by the fact that tether (the most successful stable coin business) is pumping keet awkwardly hard. this does not make much sense to me. why keet and not say lightning or/and nostr?
It’s not really about Keet, it’s just a proof of what can be done with where these tools are now.

And as for the things you mentioned, hash PoW wasn’t new, chaining signatures wasn’t new, distributed networks weren’t new, but #Bitcoin was a profound innovation that used them.

In a similar context, the pear stack uses a bunch of technologies that the team has been working on for a long time. Mafintosh is at the head of this and he is the one who’s been working on Hypercore from the beginning. But this is the first time they are all in an approachable form. Pear Runtime is basically a Nodejs replacement that lets you build apps easily on top where P2P, encrypted networking is just built in and works. I’ve been working with a bunch of people who are realizing how easy it now is to build things that would’ve been a nightmare before.

People tend to forget that simply access and complexity of working with underlying tools makes an enormous difference in whether they ever catch momentum. Sure plenty of this stuff has been possible before, so the question is why didn’t it happen yet? Why hasn’t someone else put all the pieces together? It just takes time and resources and dedication that few have. Luckily Mafintosh has kept at it for damn near a decade.

What this is, in short, is BitTorrent 2.0. It move BitTorrent from a clunky, static tool for downloading files, into a dynamic and fast network for sharing or serving literally anything. All you need is a key to serve anything or connect to anyone. It has already completely changed how I use all of my self hosted stuff, and as the tools I’m using become more mature, this will absolutely be my most used method for talking between devices (actually it already is)

I’ve also been working on my own application to solve a problem that has driven me absolutely mad over the years. Hope to have an alpha very soon.
I can't discuss technical merits of Keet deeper than I already have. I'm going to learn more.

However back to my original question. What does tether have to do with all this?
Nothing really. Paolo is just a nerd who likes distributed tech and BitTorrent, tether is holding boatloads of USD bonds that are paying them high short term interest rates, and he is trying to figure out how to spend their profit. As he told me, “let’s fuck web 2.” He just geeks out on all this stuff and wants to fund it so got involved a year or two ago and Mafintosh was able to bring on a bigger team and speed up what they were doing by a lot.
Do you have any insights on what has happened to the 'thether over lightning' initiative?
No clue. Haven’t heard anything about it. Might have been tied to or put aside due to taproot assets. Seems like it’s basically being done, just haven’t heard tether specifically talk about it recently.
they are working on an alternative to lightning built with pear
Like @keet dont tweet said, rumor has it that they are building an entirely different, non-blockchain system built on the pear stack. Supposedly have been working on it for some time. Hopefully they have something for it soon. What I’ve heard sounds really interesting
its a bigger deal than nostr
