I too had a lab when i was young, but trained like your shepherd. She was always super hungry and would eat the whole bowl no matter how full you did it.

We just said "yes" when she was allowed to eat. Meanwhile waterfalls of drool would make puddles on the ground as soon as she as much as thought there was the possibility of food.

Loved that dog to death though.
