Good morning Nostr ☀️⚡️🔥🤙 Coming in hot today a bunch of questions for this brilliant community. Coffee has hit ⚡️☕️⚡️ 1) does anyone have a #Trezor discount code? Like the way people with podcasts always offer referral codes for HWWs and services? 2) could someone explain how Trezors work without a secure element chip (and why it’s “okay”)? 3) is there a Bitcoin-only trezor? Thought so, but not seeing one… 4) has Trezor removed coinjoins or set any limitations recently, due to the Samourai shutdown and Wasabi leaving USA? 5) is the touchscreen version (Model T) really worth an extra $100, if the ColdCard MK4 is actually cheaper? PS: I don’t have any Bitcoin. #asknostr #plebchain #bitcoin
dont use trezor bro. they be fumblin the data
Ah, I forgot I’d heard something about this. Was it a customer info leak, like with Ledger?
You really don't own any ₿TC?
Not a single sat
I don't believe you
Lol
1) no 2) It's not ok. If an attacker gets your Trezor, your private keys are much more vulnerable. 3) not sure 4) not sure 5) I wouldn't waste money on a Trezor. ColdCard or Passport are the only way to go.
Appreciate the feedback! The one I was thinking of recommending to my friend was the mid tier “trezor safe” with the secure element and lower price point. Love my ColdCard. Haven’t used the Passport; it looks real nice. Pricey though…
I'd suggest CC over trezor. the model T does have more functionality over the original model. both can be pwned easily if the attacker has physical access to the device. both have btc only firmware you can run, but that doesn't change the fact that the company spends a lot of their time working on shitcoin BS instead of working on making a better hodl storage device. do trezors have value? probably. in a world where CC are available, would I ever suggest one for storing someone's hodl? no. if price doesn't make sense for a CC, it shouldn't make sense for a trezor either...just repurpose an old phone and run bluewallet or envoy on it. passports are solid choice too, btw
Thank you - some great points here. Appreciate it ⚡️🤙
Just got a Coldcard Q. Can’t recommend highly enough.
I love my MK4. Might spring for the Q one day… I’m also excited to see what CoinKite ends up building for a mesh/nostr-something signer I’ve heard discussed on Bitcoin.review
Debating on getting the Q or MK4. I can't decide.
Never used the Q but I love the MK4
2) Their new model ("Trezor Safe 3") does have a secure element chip. Not having one is okay if you don't expect anyone to get physical access to your Trezor, otherwise it isn't. Hence the new model. 4) Yes, theirs will shut down on June 1. See this: https://twitter.com/Trezor/status/1786126207924252979 .
Thanks, very helpful! Could you explain (or point me toward documentation for) the argument against a need for the chip?
I can't find the link right now, but their reasoning was that most secure element chips use proprietary code, and one has to sign an NDA to even access the documentation, which goes against the whole idea of open source. They also said they evaluated a few chips and found vulnerabilities, but were unable to disclose because of those NDAs. Apparently they found a fully open source chip. They reference the openness concerns in this article: https://trezor.io/learn/a/secure-element-in-trezor-safe-3 .
Thank you, that’s incredibly helpful! Always curious to know more about these different decisions and their tradeoffs (especially when recommending one device over another to someone). Thanks again!
Also, I’m trying to zap you but don’t see the ⚡️ on your note or profile. Are you set up with a Lightning address (and my client is misbehaving) or do you just not have zaps set up?
No, I don't have a Lightning address set up. I appreciate the thought though :)

GM @bostonwine 🌞☕️ why do you prefer trezor devices? There are so many HWW and signing devices e.g. SeedSigner, BitBox, Jade, Passport, ColdCard … https://bitcoiner.guide/wallet/hardware/ none of these devices is bad, but each has its own philosophy
GM, I don’t prefer the Trezor — never owned one — I’m a big fan of the CC or BB. Asking because I’m helping a friend with self custody and they’re lookin for a cheaper option
In my opinion SeedSigner is an awesome first signing device but it isn't a HWW.
Honestly I wouldn’t weigh the price between HWWs at all. I got a Coldcard Q after using Ledger, Trezor, etc. It is the best option in my opinion. Plenty of optional features supported and online documentation explains everything perfectly. After getting a Coldcard Q I’ve learned a lot of things about bitcoin that I didn’t know before.
Yeah, I find you learn more with each new device & its unique features. The friend I’m helping to self-custody is looking for a lower priced device, so I’m just trying to gauge if the Trezor is worth recommending
Lowest price I would say is Tapsigner. Setup with Nunchuk and it’s the best beginner experience. Start your friend with a Coinkite Bitcoin only product to minimize the potential for potential shitcoining
Thought about the TapSigner, although I’m also a bit reluctant to suggest anything without a confirmation screen (I know nunchuck, kinda) just in terms of best practices. But thank you!
3. The Trezor Safe 3 device comes with no firmware preinstalled. So the first time you set it up there is an option to download the Bitcoin-only firmware or the universal firmware that supports more coins. So it’s the same device with the same secure element but we have the option to use Bitcoin-only open source software on it.
That’s great to know. A step in the right direction, certainly, thanks!
