If you want any privacy on nostr, you have to rotate npubs and be very selective in what you’re sharing. I think that’s the only way. Many people here don’t care about privacy but talk about it often, which is very confusing.

You don't even need privacy unless you got something to hide.

That was going to be my reply after reading the thread. For the less exposed, it's quite managable. If I had public-facing identity, I might have a few alter-egos. Still pretty freaky, that data is vaccumed and stored in an airtight chamber somewhere in Virginia or a province in some other large nation.
Yeah harder if you have a public persona. In that case I’d limit what I say and use other nyms to express freely
I havent had privacy in ten years so what is it?
I’m not making a judgement on anyone for choosing whatever level of privacy they like. Privacy is a sliding scale and depends on who you’re keeping things private from. Obviously the NSAs of the world will see all. But with nyms we have some level of privacy unless we disclose a lot about ourselves and leave other clues like browsing without VPN or posting images that can easily be reverse searched.
baby, i am not that "programmer smart" to know how to fight the system, but i do know that i would throw it all away for peace of mind. Years ago, people were like get a VPN, i did, and nothing changed. I was still followed. I laughed it off and I honestly think no matter how much people preach about privacy, it will not happen for the masses, only for the people that have the understanding for the system itself. I don't. I can build a simple website, but I don't understand how someone sees the holes in my wall. Privacy is a misunderstood concept. I choose to want to be a creative, but I do not choose to have the world know my every move. There is a difference to a level of understand and a level of computer knowledge that claiming choosing my privacy level is a choice, it is not. That is false. In my area. Absolutely false. I can't walk without people knowing where I am. And I can't escape from that. So the only solution that makes sense to me, is to literally throw out all of my electronics, but even then now they are tracking people via brainwaves. So I may sound crazy now, but I will talk to you all in a few years. Otherwise, tee hee! I am just doing for fun.
I mean, there's something inherently public about social media. Privacy and anonymity are different and most of are not exactly Jason bourne.

I grow peppers and shit post... I enjoy a degree of privacy but who are we kidding.
i am messing around, i already know that i dont know...my content is absolutely meaningless, so if the "governement" or "watchers" feel i am that interesting....call me
way more interesting than mine. I put up a swing today... setting the world on fire over here.
i really love swings...i always wished i had porch swing so i can sit and cuddle, rest my head on their shoulder
 Wayfair. Very reasonable.

And yeah, agreed. it's nice to unplug for a bit and actually read while gently swinging. Just a chance to slow down and watch the garden grow. #GardenTherapy
 Had me until "brainwaves"
 i hear U
I’d argue that Nostr is one of the least private protocols for social networking in existence.

But it is Anonymous. Possibly one of the most anonymous. But that’s nuance that’s often lost.
Is it, though? Relays can collect IPs and other identifying info.
Yes, because that’s obfuscatable, and only easily tied to ID by ISPs and governments. Nostr has the distinction of not requiring *any* PII to be stored, leaked, or monetized.

Basically Nostr is as anonymous as the internet can be.
I share because I like you guys

 It’s fine, not judging 🫂
 Burned many npubs
How do you mean? Creating multiple “personas”?! Or just telling people who you are with a new npub?
Come on - - what are you hiding?
 Catnip- Mine!!
 Tampoco hay que tener miedo
I changed my profile without changing my npub and I bet nobody would’ve noticed if I didn’t tell everyone. Especially since I made it very difficult to find any of my old notes.

We should also have a conversation about stylometry.

Your word choices, spelling mistakes and post structure can be correlated between npubs and between media, if someone cares enough and you have posted a lot, unless you take countermeasures.

Spellcheck alone helps.

Anonymouth is the classic tool for anonymising your writing. Any self-hosted text-to-text LLM is better.

And given resource constraints and laziness of the main threat, staying off collaborator social media is probably the best defence of all.

Your thoughts, flames and BS?
I just want privacy from the govt. I don't care what all you know about me.
Never tick "Remember my choice" in nostr-land: always confirm every action. 👍

We have talked about using new keys per client, per website etc.

Now my wife had a brilliant idea of creating new keys per hashtag. I.e. me talking about nostr dev is one npub, but me talking about bitcoin is another. That would make nostr look much more like a collection of internet forums. I have not thought it through too deeply, but feel there's something there...
nostr is not for privacy. it's for not being censored.
