 Man, that's grim. Suppose your next best bet would've been to befriend a student in your class or co-worker and see where things take you from there. 

Suppose that isn't an option then there are always hobby or interest groups in your community. D&D, Technology, and so on.

 If you're studying IT subjects like I am, sure. Though that doesn't mean you can't strike up a conversation with someone at the library. As for local groups, you'll need to ask around and look for 'em. Though it shouldn't be too difficult to find a D&D group these days.
