NASA has confirmed that a cylindrical object that crashed through the roof of a home in Naples, Florida, on March 8, 2024, was a chunk of space junk from equipment discarded at the International Space Station. The object, weighing 1.6 pounds (0.7 kilograms) and measuring 4 inches (10 centimeters) tall and roughly 1 1/2 inches (4 centimeters) wide, was a metal support used to mount old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal. The pallet was jettisoned from the space station in 2021, and while the load was expected to burn up on reentry into Earth's atmosphere, this piece survived. The homeowner, Alejandro Otero, discovered the object after returning from vacation and finding it had ripped through his ceiling and damaged the flooring. No injuries were reported.
