@92f75699 Did you read the article. It’s also to deal with theft, of course abuse is a big problem but theft, shoplifting is a problem too.
@0a3f493d Still don't get it, sorry. Is your point that you don't like self-service checkouts and therefore people should steal from the store? Trying to understand your point.
@92f75699 Since the inception of self checkouts, which I do use on occasion if I’m in a hurry, there has been an increase in shoplifting/theft. Even with serviced checkouts shoplifting has always happened but not to the same degree as happens now. Whether I like self checkouts or not is beside the point, the point being shoplifting has increased so maybe going back to serviced checkouts will curb the problem. I don’t know if your being deliberately disingenuous as to why you don’t *get it* no one else seems to have a problem with my post!
@0a3f493d No bad intent. Just asking. Most experts appear to agree that high levels of shoplifting would appear to be driven by the high cost of living, rather than self-service checkouts. https://amp.abc.net.au/article/102772936 has a good, well-researched, piece about it (not least, that's it's a global phenomenon that appears unrelated to staffing levels). I get a bit tired with knee-jerk reactions against technology, when it doesn't appear to be a technology problem.
