US tells UN: Israel undermines goals with civilian harm in Gaza

The US deputy ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, stated that the continued pattern of civilian harm resulting from incidents like Sunday's airstrikes undermines Israel's strategic goals in Gaza. The US is reviewing a draft UN Security Council resolution put forward by Algeria that orders Israel to immediately halt its military offensive in Rafah. The resolution cites a ruling by the International Court of Justice that ordered Israel to halt its military assault on Rafah. Israel has been fighting to eradicate Hamas, which rules Gaza, since a cross-border attack in October 2023. The US believes there are alternatives to a major military operation that would better advance Israel's goal of defeating Hamas and protecting innocent Palestinians.
