I'm starting to think a fair amount of people don't get the importance or really even the difference between using a protocol vs a platform.
Do the people making arrests care about that distinction?
And does that defence hold up in court? Are there any cases/ precedents for this?

They do not understand the difference.
You can kill a person but not an idea. You can take a man’s life but not his eternal soul.
I think that’s accurate, most people want things as easy as possible, if it becomes even a little complicated, need to learn more than what they want, they loose interest, attention span has reduced dramatically the last decade, plus most people don’t even know the difference between a protocol and platform, and don’t even care for the reasons above.
I also think that there is this weird mysticism around technology where people, like you said, get turned away when it takes a bit of tinkering to figure out and it doesent "just work". Like there are plenty of people on here that might not know the nuts and bolts of nostr but played around enough to get it and still be here.
Never thought about it myself until I fell down the #bitcoin rabbit hole. I’m an old guy too so it’s double sad.
