What if they were humans on the surface at one point, but they went underground a very long time ago, and they live there? That explains the white bodies and big dark eyes and stuff. I don't necessarily believe that, but it's another theory. I don't believe anything 100% when it comes to aliens.  

 One possibility. The native Americans have tales of the "ant people" who were exactly like that.
