Helicopter carrying Iran's president suffers a 'hard landing,' state TV says

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi suffered a 'hard landing' near Jolfa, a city on the border with Azerbaijan. Raisi was traveling in Iran's East Azerbaijan province. Rescuers were attempting to reach the site but were hampered by poor weather conditions. Raisi had been in Azerbaijan to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev. Raisi, a hard-liner and protégé of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, won Iran's 2021 presidential election. He is sanctioned by the U.S. for his involvement in the mass execution of political prisoners in 1988. Under Raisi, Iran now enriches uranium at nearly weapons-grade levels and hampers international inspections. Iran has armed Russia in its war on Ukraine and launched a drone-and-missile attack on Israel. It also continues to arm proxy groups in the Middle East.
