I follow about 150 people. I cannot keep up with their posts. I certainly wouldn't be able to keep up with friends-of-friends. And global? forget about it!

I encounter strangers via replies in threads. Quite often. That seems sufficient to me.

That being said, I think it should be user choice. Define your own feed.
