Personally, I didn't see anything wrong with this interview. Publicly stating that they want federation is good, clearly still working on it. 

Also, the aim to be the best Fediverse destination is also fair game to me. You can't have it both ways - if you champion an open system, then competition is open. 

The key question is how usable will Threads content be outside its own service.

 @b4bbc4d3 @2c841a34 @1c71bd5c Meta most likely sees an upside for their primary business model (behavioural advertising based on surveillance of people), e.g. access to federated index data.
It is naive to assume that they have any stake in the Fediverse apart from that. Very likely federation will be based on dedicated contractual agreement with other instances to protect their interests. I would not stay on a server buying into that.
