I have older laptop which would probably serve me as a backup laptop for my business.

I have a feeling it is a perfect moment to dwelve into Linux for the first time in my life.

Which distribution suits you best and would you recommend it to a newb? And what are the must-have apps you use as competition to such as Office, Adobe,…?

 Ubuntu. LibreOffice.
I use Mint, its been my daily driver for several yrs. Easy for newbs, and i am not too techie. It comes with all the basic functionality you need. Libre Office is built in, is compatible with any other office suite. There are thousands of apps you can downliad from the Mint software store. I use Freetube in place of Youtube, works great.
Pop OS, but really look into michael bazzel \ Intel techniques- pay a few bucks for his Linux ebook and you will everything you need from probably the most qualified and realistic person I could think of. He goes over everything you to switch along with commands, explinations, ect
https://pop.system76.com/ is a great place to start for beginners. It's based on Ubuntu so has a ton of compatible packages and tutorials. System76 just adds a bunch of UX polish on top.

If you want something not Ubuntu based I always recommend vanilla Fedora

Third vote for Pop OS unless it’s a really old laptop, if so you might want to try lxle.
Mint was my first attempt about a year ago and it really impressed me at how easy it was to install and use. I've recently installed Alpine Linux on an old laptop for precisely the same reason you mention--and thought it is blazing fast, I wouldn't recommend it for a first dive into #Linux. I'm sure those recommending PopOS have good reasons to do so as well. With most of these you can't go wrong!
 Qubes os
I'm using Debian... OpenOffice for your MS Office alternative. GIMP for your Photoshop alternative
#LinuxMint is the friendliest, you already have all the basic applications installed.
