Bilateral brain stimulation can be used to decrease anxiety and improve emotional processing and regulation.
Bilateral stimuli can be visual, auditory, or tactile and occur in a rhythmic right-left pattern. I have a couple favorite tactile methods.
The Butterfly Hug
1. Cross arms over chest and grasp upper arms with opposing hands.
2. Begin tightening one hand then the other in a slow rhythmic left-right pattern.
3. Draw your awareness to your breath. Start taking slower, deeper breaths into your belly.
4. Continue for as long as you would like.
5. Can also be used while discussing difficult topics with a trusted party. Might help you process things more easily.
Clasped hands
1. Interlace all fingers and clasp your hands so that your thumbs are touching the opposing hands.
2. Push down one thumb then the other in a slow, rhythmic pattern.
3. This one can be done in your lap so can be used more publically if needed.
