I disagree. The problem with serving in the military is that your give up sovereignty over your own decisions - up to and including the highest human sin: taking human life. It is sold to you as if you are doing that in service of your country but ultimately you end up serving at the pleasure of politicians who are in-bed with the military-industrial-for-profit-war-machine. Honorable intentions get corrupted by by dishonorable bureaucrats, and politicians. Individuals I know in the military are some of the most honorable, respectable, well intentioned people I know, but they are no longer masters of their own destiny. I understand the impulse to serve but by idolizing the act, we direct some of our brightest and best youth to be puppets at the hands of bad people. There are better ways to serve your country.
