It's not an account, so usernames are a poor terminology. You aren't a "user" of a platform. Its more like a handle so people can search you by a name with an @ sign. So yes many people can have the same username but nobody else has your npub. With nostr, your npub is the platform.
On Nostr you are your npub you are not your username. There is also your nip-05 that identifies you in case someone else wants to impersonate you. For example my nip-05 is : isolabellart@nsec.app And no one else can have it like it because it's tied to my npub.
