The best way to say that Lyn is too bearish, is to go and tell all your friends that the Telegram CEO was just fucking arrested for allowing free encrypted speech, and to forge your new decentralized identity right now.

Anyway, good evening.

EXACTLY THIS!!!! So glad @preston got me on NOSTR a year and a half ago!

Life is getting crazy….
But what can really protect you from a monopoly on violence?
The ability to move your money and identity globally offers some protection due to escapism via Bitcoin and Nostr, in the really rough scenarios. Like Venezuela.

Locally, we should note that it’s not like Telegram users are arrested. That would be unworkable. Only the CEO was. The more individual a policy gets, the more expensive and unpopular it is to enforce. There is no CEO of Bitcoin or Nostr.

The1930s gold ban was brutal, but hardly ever enforced. Going after individuals was both expensive and unpopular. That applies today as well. And information travels faster now. We should use it.

Structural debasement requires obfuscation in order to secure unaware seigniorage from its public. The more that it’s brought to public awareness, the weaker it is.

What you can do: make money honest again.

Make them tell us our laws.
Make them tell us we can’t hold sound money.
Make them tell us we can’t transmit digital money to our friends like we would with cash. And then ask why.
Make them tell us they need to tax us, because they can’t quietly debase us.
Make it more transparent. Shine a light on it and ask people if it’s just.
I'm 100℅ with you. We gotta keep pushing the goal post back in the right direction.
50% or so on a government check say it's just
Hopefully Durov made Telegram independently resilient. Time will tell.

"Make them" is a political barnum statement. It shall not be effective.

For Americans, the most effective resistance I've seen advocated to "make them" had been through the jury nullification and state legislature/referendums.

Any such proposals are effectively suppressed, dismissed and ignored even here:

 Make Money Great Again
Who pays for NOSTR to exist? I don’t get it.
The Relays, Investors, Upload Providers, App Devs
Ok but that all sounds like venture capital and philanthropy. Is it sustainable? What’s the business model?
"A protocol does not need to be sustainable or have a business model" is what you will hear here
Yeah. I’ve been here since almost the first month, but I’ve never understood where the resources come from to run it. It’s decentralized, but if the government could arrest the funders and shut it down, that is obv a vulnerability.
Nostr users only care about money so that could be an issue
Well, we care about Bitcoin, yes. Seems like, conceptually, there could be a zap tax that funds what’s needed on NOSTR.
 And so it begins.
Bro Jack spent like 10 bitcoin or something to bootstrap nostr
Which might make him vulnerable, given the Telegram founder’s arrest. I’m just asking if there’s
A decentralized way to fund NOSTR, because they can’t arrest all of us.
Ya like Lyn responded to me with a long ass message and I respect her she's got a voice she's independent but you gotta think about why normal ppl never make a fuss is because they make an example out of the powerful people so ya they cant kill us all but when they attack the leaders in a community most ppl get the hint. So it's basically impossible for a regular average person to contend with this because the cost of attacking the network is too high. The individual in weak compared to the organized coordination of the system.
Your post made me finally create a Nostr account. I knew it would eventually happen, but the news this week, and what you said, really made it sink in. I had better make one sooner rather than later.
 This.
Telegram is not encrypted speech! The connection to telegram server is encrypted (with home baked cryptography - not a good idea especially in chat protocols), but the data is not end to end encrypted and Telegram servers see plaintext.

There is an option to do a sort of home cooked encrypted one on one chat that no one uses, but any groups/channels are just a goldmine for whichever intelligence agency gets their fingers on it.

If you want encrypted: signal, simplex, ...

Here's a comparison:
https://juraj.bednar.io/en/blog-en/2022/05/03/encrypted-messengers-comparison/

Here's an explanation on why I think it matters:
https://juraj.bednar.io/en/blog-en/2022/04/29/encrypted-messengers-how-to-communicate-privately/

Also: Nostr is also not encrypted.
Also, ironically, making it encrypted would help him avoid jail. (I don't cheer on him being arrested, that's a horrible precedent).

Signal does not see groups, membership, content, ... They encrypt to protect the users, but also themselves. They can't analyze messages if they contain drug trades or child porn, because they are not in business of storing messages, they ship around encrypted blobs of data and they can't tell their meaning even if they wanted to.

SimpleX goes even further - they don't operate infrastructure, anyone can run a relay. They are in a business of writing user interface for end to end encrypted chat protocols. Users use servers operated by third parties, that also don't see the content, in this case not even user identifiers (there are none on SimpleX). Each connection looks different, so you can't even write a proper court order, because it's very hard to identify what user it concerns.
 Done and done!
 I could not believe it
