Astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore originally took off for the ISS on June 5, 2024, but NASA wanted them to stay up longer so their teams can study thruster failures and helium leaks on the new Boeing Starliner ship.
NASA officials have been discussing potential plans with SpaceX to use their Crew Dragon spacecraft as a backup option for returning the astronauts if Starliner is still deemed unsafe for reentry. The possibility of leaving two seats empty on an upcoming Crew Dragon launch for Wilmore and Williams has been considered
