I got the 13 mini. I like the small form factor. Too bad it didn't sell well enough for them to continue the model. Honestly the improvements are so small now its hard to justify getting the latest and greatest for $1,000. Your doing it right. I know most people get their phones subsidized by the carriers so a lot of people are generations behind so the latest is a decent jump for them.
