People were willing to pay the tradesmen because it is through the labor of their skilled hands that things are done right, that knowledge and skill is worth paying for.

It was not necessarily just paying for the task - it was paying for the task to be done in a lasting, knowing fashion. Anyone who says that the trades, just as higher learning, should be abandoned is a bitter saboteur at best.
