Monogamy will never be a thing of the past, and it's possible to be in love with more than one person at a time (and has happened frequently in the past). 

In terms of American culture, which has deep roots in puritanism, people have realized that there is no point in adhering to  restrictions based on religious concepts that have no basis in logic, respecting others, etc.
