Yes, I considered that, but in my mind I’m including a 401K (a US-specific program) in that category as many employers also pay into it to offset their own taxes. You’re putting it away in a deferred account but trusting fund managers not to lose you money before you’re allowed to touch it.

It’s too complicated for most people to understand. I’ve been in company seminars where they bring in the guys in suits from Fidelity and Schwab and people’s eyes glaze over. They usually ask me to explain it to them afterwards. I just tell them to take exactly as much as the employer will match, and then suggest matching their own contribution in bitcoin and let them compare the results in a few years. Most don’t want to do the work.

It’s sad to see, I talk to people who graduated the same year as I did and have never put a dime away for their future. They’re middle-aged by the time reality begins to set in on them and don’t know what to do. When you’re in your 20s you think you have all the time in the world ahead of you. When you’re in your 40s you realize more than half the time you had is behind you.
