do we need more education around bitcoin forks, consensus, the role of nodes, etc.?

Bitcoin education has gotten so much better but maybe we’re a bit underinvested in education around how the network itself works? very important. we the market determine its future

i’ve collected a bunch of tweets over the last week regarding open source devs killing bitcoin. going to spend this Mailbag Monday episode dispelling what seems to be a lot of misunderstanding.

curious if yall have any thoughts or requests before i record
 Sounds great and valuable
At the front of my mind lately is education around node/bitcoin core updates. Node running has become easier and more convenient but with convenience comes complacency. Its a ways off, but one day I can imagine a fork being accomplished by user-friendly node OSs simply pushing an update to core without many novice noderunners even noticing, or timely noticing. Maybe it's a naive concern but it's something I've been thinking about lately.
Totally agree with this line of thinking. With the App Store-like approach systems such as start9 and umbrel have taken, OCD folks like myself will instinctively feel compelled to run node updates if, for no other reason, simply to make the update notification disappear.

Additionally, I’ve seen some high signal folks in the space suggest that we should treat every core upgrade as an attack while other high signal folks produce reports on how many nodes are running old/out of date versions of core.

It can be confusing for sure.

(PS - please don’t read this as a criticism of start9 or umbrel. I absolutely love them…just using them to illustrate a point).
@Start9 is there an option like "ignore this update" or "dont remind me" to dismiss the update notification/badge
everythingi needed to know about the network came from the free online bitcoin course from princeton from like 2013. would highly recommend
More education to more people is never a bad thing.
I agree Jack. I have been trying to explain this to my friends and have not been able to articulate it in a great way. Could you talk about Developers, Core/Knots ect. and consensus/nodes? I think there is a lot of confusion around "who controls Bitcoin" especially with Black rock getting into the game. Love the podcasts man, you dad is awesome with really great insight!
agree. that will be the goal
Great - the more the better. Would suggest letting viewers know approx level of technical detail you’ll cover and for those just learning, offer some alternate resources for starting with the basics. Also, I’m always looking for ways to explain the different roles and benefits of miners, nodes, validation, etc. just mapping out the different components of the protocol v network. Thanks again for all you’ve done so far and keep it up!
 We always do.
 Great! ⚡️😊👍
A lot of people think bitcoin core is a threat because it is “centralized”
We can always use more education. Cartoon animations is an underutilized route too. Simplicity and being concise is key. Ppl have short attention spans, think tiktok / YouTube shorts style. Normies don’t read
 Strike's roadmap
Keep it simple for a regular folk to understand. You got this!
 yep
It’s a great initiative, moreover you are very clear and you can speak to youngsters and elderly people, everyone gets your message clearly.
We Definitely do need more educational vids for the masses. This is a short non-technical video I made to onboard more normies to nostr, feel free to share 😉 : https://m.primal.net/HnUB.mp4 I also made this one about cashu: https://m.primal.net/HsMt.mp4
Prereq for listeners: read The Blocksize War
The more the better, would love to see it!
 Yes, please do
Knowledge is power, educate us Jack
 💯
Idk man. I think people are just lazy and don't wanna learn
 Stay positive friend
Can you talk about ossification vs updates to the base layer
 Yes

More 'boots-on-ground' educators.
Ongoing and improving education about the #bitcoin network is needed to aid the distinction from 💩🪙s.
Absolutely! I was just learning about how the encryption works and man does that make you BULLISH
 YES
More developers going through code. Learning the language is much easier when you have real world applications to compare with.
Yes we need - if you published it to Strike users (many of whom have probably never spent time on Nostr or Bitcoin Twitter) it would be a meaningful value-add.
hell yeah we do need more education around all of those subjects period
 Lol this has opensats/ODELL/Saylor vibes
We need more voices and leadership to stand up against toxicity in the cryptocurrency community.
Please discuss ocean mining and censoring of whirlpool transactions
lmfao they arent censoring whirlpool you slowpoke it just doesnt get accepted into proper datacarrier respecting templates, only unfiltered core templates allow them. learn the fucking technicalities
 > "proper datacarrier respecting templates"

Seems like if anything, "proper" would be Bitcoin Core's dafault datacarrier size - 80 bytes. Knots is a fork of Bitcoin Core with a non-standard datacareier size of 42 bytes. Ocean is 100% censoring Samourai Wallet, Sapprow Wallet, & Bitcoin Keeper tx0's. And BIP47 PaynNym notification txs.

Also, Whirlpool CJ's don't use an OP_RETURN so "learn the fucking technicalities".
LMFAOOO, you morons are so fucking dumb it hurts.
So funny for you to suggest centralization and not fixing A LITERAL EXPLOIT. Typical moron
LMFAO IT DOESNT USE AN OP_RETURN YET IT USES DATACARRIER WHICH IS THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT, TRY SOME CONSISTENCY YOU FUCKING SPOOK METH ADDICT FUCKS
"CENSORING" AKA GIVING MINERS THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE WHETHER OR NOT THEIR TEMPLATE SUPPORTS YOUR RETARDED NON BITCOIN CENTRIC PROTOCOL, FUCK YOU
HAVE FUN PRETENDING YOUR RETARDED ORDINAL EXISTS AND IS NOT VAPOR WARE FAGGGOTTTTTT
 Well said.
only well said if you have literal retard brains
"Seems like if anything the proper thing to do would be use the centralized developers version of Bitcoin which does nothing to address the growing inconsistency on the Bitcoin network whatsoever"

If you think thats correct you are either purposefully or accidently anti-Bitcoin, either way it makes you a retard a loser and most of all a faggot
Your take is gay AF… proves you arent’s actually using the “freedom” part of the tech
lmao yea and freedom would be to do whatever your RETARDED ass says right? Kiss my ass faggot. You wouldnt know freedom if I replaced your 12 in bedside dildo with it.
 Lol. Pussy ass bitch
aw did someones argument get so utterly disproven that he has to resort to pure insults? its ok it means literally nothing from you. have fun with your shitty fake privacy protocol and scam ordinal coins, im sure that will be so much superior than just using normal bitcoin like a non brain damaged person.
🤣 you threw the first insult instead of replying to my post in a respectful manner, so GFY faggot. I have never bought a shitcoin in my life and I don’t give a fuck what those idiots do with ordinals, they represent zero threat to Bitcoin. Stop sucking Luke’s dick and educate yourself. Whirlpool and paynms are essential, and that shitty Core fork is simply a convenient path to censorship 🖕🏼 eat a dick and go back to your basement
Lmao thats the most retarded thing I've ever read.
Care to explain why the UTXO set has grown 10x as much since ordinals started exploiting the datacarrier overflow? No you cant because you just ignore problems and parrot the easily disprovable propaganda spread by retards who think Scamourai actually gives them privacy. LMFAO.
Im gonna keep making more than you are mining on Ocean while literally 0 txs get censored, but in your head we censor more shit than the CCP does. Im so happy that Im a huge threat to you. Fear me you small pathetic clown. Fear me
lol you couldn’t scare a 4 year old girl bitch. The UTXO set growing isn’t an issue, bitcoin keeps working as designed, it’s only little crybabies like you who want to fix something that isn’t broken. If you earn so much you can afford the higher fees. Cry harder that your bullshit ocean mining will become obsolete as more and more people realize they aren’t doing shit to make anything better for bitcoiners and pushing your shitty fork of Core will end in failure
Only one crying is you. I am becoming a whole coiner way faster than I thought I would thanks to Ocean, I think Ill stay and not be poor like you.
" The UTXO set growing isn’t an issue" is only something someone who doesn't run full nodes or understand how Bitcoin works would say. Which one are you? It's ok that you are voicing centralization by only using the original core github repository, unfortunately for you I am not a homosexual so I actually think Bitcoin should be DEcentralized instead. Dont you agree?
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ9ryoX5uuE

You are, YOU are Gay.
Resorting to insults because you have no argument, no surprise here faggot
Ignoring my paragraphs of argument because you have no counter argument, no surprise here. Also come up with your own insults unoriginal mega fuck tard.
ROFL you started it and I finished it and you haven’t said a fucking thing that would change my mind on the topic you insignificant little fuckwad
Lmao yea because your mind is set to swallow the bullshit promoted by scammers, have fun being a low brain poor loser, I literally couldnt care less.
Do you know how I know you are miserable and suffer from mental illness? Because instead of replying to my post explaining your point of view in a respectful manner, you simply lobbed a condescending and insulting reply with no substance. It must be painful to be that broken that you need to insult random bitcoiners who have any stance you don’t agree on. If you actually wanted people to see things your way, you wouldn’t do that stupid shit… Seek professional help and try to get your life back on track
LMFAO read the thread back moron, I insulted you after you insulted me.
IF YOU CANT TAKE THE HEAT STAY THE FUCK OUT THE KITCHEN
Your position is wrong and your deflection from the argument proves it.
FAGGOT
Your first reply was insulting you fucking idiot. If you ever spoke like that to anyone in real life you would get punched in the face. But you seem to not realize just how much of a prick you are, which is hilarious because it shows that you really are retarded
Lmao awww is someone so mad that he has to deflect from the original argument for which I started the conversation off with that he has to resort to threats of physical violence. Thats cute. Ocean isnt censoring your invalid transaction fuckwit, cry harder
It seems you can’t even read, truly, you are a special kind of idiot
 🎯
 You don’t belong here.
LMFAO TYPICAL ATTITUDE OF A RETARD SPOOK WHO DOESNT UNDERSTAND BITCOIN
This is the reminder I need to work on some courses and some open forums
 no
 1. I want a broader explanation of how I can "vote" with my node. It feels as if the miners have all the decision power. But I've read otherwise. It's confusing.

Also, I would like to know if I can "vote" for certain "things" with my node. For example, I want to "punish" spam on the timechain. Or "disable" Taproot on my Bitcoin Core version v26.0.0.

Can I switch on/off certain aspects brought onto my node by the devs?

Is it an all-or-nothing thing?

2. I didn't fully understand the last implementation of Taproot. I read that the miners were voting on it, but I (the node owner) was never asked to vote. Does only those who "have proven to work" have the right to vote.

Do us --the users-- have any saying besides this or that Bitcoin Core version we choose to run?

great questiions. if you find answers, please share. still learning this space too.
yes to BTC education. most of the world knows BTC now but to buy it, use it , store .... phew its a journey!

Ditto @ATL| Anti-Toxity League comment. Crypto needs to understand they are working for the same goals. Different approaches should be encouraged and communcation channels kept open.

United we stand, Divided ....
Yes. I always want to learn from the people who know.
I really enjoyed your Madeira talk.
Since you asked… I absolutely want bitcoin to succeed long term. I understand the case for software maintenance over time. I’d say my concern is that while we technically can read the code of open source projects or proposed changes, most of our community (myself included) aren’t savvy enough to do that- or do that well. We will fall back to other people’s assessments or summaries, which may or may not be accurate. The “experts” might be in conflict. We might have our trusted voices whose opinion we hold high, but there’s risk there too. I appreciate the ones who are full time in this space- but a lot of us aren’t even if we run nodes, etc. At the end of the day- none us want to break this with a self inflicted wound by a malicious actor who broke the trust.
Yes, we need more education about that stuff. For the lower part of the bell curve please
 never enough education bro 🆒
I've long maintained that Bitcoiners are, overall, great educators. Most of the time we have shitty students.

It's on us the teachers to stay resolute, be persistent.
Quaalcom are known for publishing extremely minimal documentation of their chips so that customers are required to partner with their engineers to get any software running on them.
What we need is the ability to buy actual practical things in real life.
Unless I can buy my coffee or burger or smokes with bitcoin, is it really useful beyond an "asset"?
I don't think so.
We still expect to see #Bitcoin to have a parabolic move to top out at $300K+ this cycle, Until then just keep stacking, and build your sats with passive arbitrage pattern to 100x your sats.

If you haven't join the rebelcapitalist vip group already, I would highly recommend it for passive accumulation.

RCL is one of the *super underrated*, extremely knowledgeable OG #Bitcoiner and newsletters, for expert trading market philosophy.

 was Lyn's account hacked?
 Absolutely. We definitely need that
Yes please. Anything that could complement content such as developer.bitcoin.org and make it easier to wrap your head around some of the technical details would help onboard new keen developers such as itself.
Here's an idea. Look for Bitcoin content on Tik-Tok, YouTube, and Meta. Then go to the comment sections. People are spouting nonsense about how Bitcoin works. It's a great opportunity to do a video reply with educational content. That content can be searched, it gets higher engagement, boosts message visibility, and enhances communication around Bitcoin topics.
Education? Aren’t the books like mastering #bitcoin, inventing #Bitcoin, @Gigi ⚡🧡 ‘s 21 Lessons, or the fucking white paper enough? Aren’t the @ODELL and @MartyBent's podcasts among many others enough education?
#inflation is the best education! Those suckers who suffer it without doing anything and still praise the fiat and the governments are walking to extinction.
This is why I’m working with PlabB Network and moving to ES to launch https://caos.global/
