Though tbh, this was a prevalent attitude among working class people of my parents' generation -the boomer-birthers- if my memory is any guide.

I think that's a good point; this hopelessness on careers, has spread 'upwards' & now patterns much of the middle-class experience as well

Also maybe climate panic is setting in. 

It is hard to get motivated about a future career on a dead planet. 

The UK has very high climate awareness compared with other countries.
