I am curious what brings permaculture and homesteading folks not already into nostr and btc to nostr? What makes these folk stay? What makes them join, and quit? #permies #permaculture #homestead #homesteading @Calm Soil @Henry @Rafa ⚡🌿🌴𓆏 @Nostralian @Maria2000 @Adam Snyder nostr:note1x583seqqdlh7m02z50r6uu4zux40j5nyzcj6jy9q34gqd3js0z4qgg55u3
A non-douchey, very supportive community that wants to increase personal liberty through pretty much any means available.
What might nostr devs or community do specifically (if anything) to better welcome non-nostr non-btc permie folk?
People are working on making the understanding of keys and such easier to understand, so... Communities and better use of topical things in more clients. It's really painful on amethyst, which us the only one I've used thus far since I'm also a newb. I'm not sure what else yet.
Ability to communicate without centralized mediator.

clients should strive to do things completely vs partially. as much as i like amethyst, it doesnt really do anything exceedingly well. most aspects are at most 60-70% complete. i assume damus also suffers from this as there isnt enough champions to work on the various projects. as examples... - posting events: ux could be improved with a rich text/markdown editor or preview for markdown support. ability to drag/drop images within the text, and associate some alt/title tags for visual impaired (this last issue may be a protocol weakness). sure would be nice if users could add tags, labels and denote a post was supposed to be in a community they are in. also not sure why attachments are limited to specific image types. id like to include an mp4 or a pdf but alas, no can do within the app, i have to upload externally then manually carry that url over. - viewing events: allow text resizing, and more menu actions like view json. allow hiding nested quoted events X+ levels deep. - lists: this feature is at best 10% complete as you can filter by them but not create or edit them - communities: better support than lists, but buried in a weird section of the app i refer to as the junk drawer. - polls: partially supported. nip hasnt been finalized. - locations: great data collection, no search support, and gps based, so for associating after the fact i need to use fakegps programs. just let me specify coordinates manually - search: exceptionally weak. no way to use filters..not even calendar choice of since/until
i think most media types seem to want 1) tools that make it easier to use as a broadcast medium 2) some monetization/revenue stream or way to funnel followers to products. Joining is about network effect FOMO and low barrier to entry. If the level of effort is too high relative to perceived value attained, then it falls off. Nostr is at this weird place where theres a few thousand regular users, but no compelling reason for most other users to actually use it when alternatives exist and have a stronger foothold. Needs content and features you can ONLY get on Nostr, or with lower friction. Speaking from personal experience I stay because its fairly permissionless to build on, but for most people that holds little to no value. I also know that any new thing that appeared on twitter will show up on nostr just as quickly. I refuse to use Facebook, Twitter, Reddit et al as fully captured but recognize this is a minority held viewpoint. In short, the reasons I stay and build is not compelling in the slightest for the average person. To get to that point for the masses we need to build, refine, and educate more.
I would guess decentralisation people are getting bored of being banned ,censored or having the platforms they were using attacked. Permaculture is decentralised and also similar to Nostr and Bitcoin in the sense most 'normal people' don't 'get it'. You tell everyone and most look at you with indifference or as if you are totally nuts. They also all provide solutions which is practically heretical in an age where outrage and expecting some centralised institution to fix the problem is far too common place. So I think most permaculture folks just get it straight away. I am hoping with nostr going forward we will get more innovative ideas and clients and be able to offer people things they can't get from elsewhere because that is where the real growth and retainment will come from. Zaps are great but I want to see decentralised soil, plant sap analysis and other databases where we can collectively pool, arrange and analyse data we have collected as a community.
