 A silent warning for every growing up millenial (and later Gens) that our fiat system is taking its toll on the most basic things... 
 It's stuff like this that makes Wikipedia a bad source. An educated guess is that it has to do with improvements in aerodynamics. The politically motivated editors here would rather reference The Guardian as evidence.

And yes, they have been disappearing un huge numbers for decades, there are countless studies to show that and tbo I don't really need a study, I remember when they were a lot more :).
