I am not even a tech person, and remember 20 years ago using ip addresses to see who was reading my live journal. How is it that on a protocol like nostr, where there are so many nyms, ip addresses are so easily exposed? Seems like a big deal. Does privacy even exist anymore?
I would assume the most paranoid nyms are also using VPNs.
I have a static ip and don’t use VPN. I’m curious what people think are the downsides of this setup. People can see i’m using nostr a lot ? Not that shocking.
I’m thinking about people with pseudonyms, If you have more than one account, wouldn’t it have the same ip address and dox you
It's me.
it's mostly an opsec leak, people can see where you are (sometimes quite precise) by geolocating your IP it also allows correlation with other services you might be using, especially if you run other P2P software on the same IP for defense in depth reasons i absolutely use a VPN for all nostr related things
Or tor
There are probably normies that don’t use vpn or tor that still don’t want to be doxxed. I don’t think that’s too great of an expectation of anyone
(To not have their ip exposed to anybody/everybody)
Don't you have the same, by sharing an image on x, where your server hosts the image?
I don’t know. I’m not on x anymore. Curious now if this is the case with all big platforms (there’s a lot about big platforms I don’t agree with, which is why I’m here). But does this mean that you could see the ip address of any person on x if they share an image?
If you're a nym on Nostr and care about privacy, then you're probably using TOR or a VPN. And if you're not, then you're not as anonymous as you thought that you were.
That sucks. As I said earlier, as a normie, this would 100% be a deterrent for me using nostr. I’m using it because I believe in the technology (content is not there yet), but this technology where you have to use an extra layer of protection, or assume doxxing , is not one I agree with
