I onboarded my dad using Primal without knowing it did this, and I think he fell into this situation of being overwhelmed by stuff from people he didn’t actually choose. I think it may be one of the reasons I don’t see him posting anymore. 

Following topics until you discover accounts you actually like is a far better way. 
Following as many people as possible or whatever’s trending only works if you’re similar to the average of all Nostr users.
