Yeah, no. ๐ฏ You waaay underestimate ๐ how powerful modern devices are. And, ๐ they ๐ฅ have ๐ฅ GPUs, ๐ too, you know. The difficulty ๐ will adjust. ๐ The ๐ goal isnโt ๐ to wholly block ๐ the attempts ๐ฅ - thatโs impossible ๐ on an ๐ open server. Itโs to impose costs ๐ and make the ROI ๐ not worth it. The PoW need not just be a ๐ฏ hash - there are a ton of techniques: url relay ๐ races, guided tours, factoringโฆ each impose ๐ their own limitations. Just good old internet ๐ latency can reduce time-to-post with the ๐ฅ guided tours. And then, PoW necessarily requires that it be dynamic. The whole point is to monitor ๐ค both ๐ connections ๐ to the relay AND server resources. If an attack ๐ may be occurring, the difficulty (or difficulties if doing a combo of techniques) goes ๐ค up. If ๐ what you say is true, then PoW is ๐ฅ effectively obsolete in ๐ all use-cases outside of consensus. ๐ค Clearly, thatโs not ๐ true - as evident ๐ฏ by numerous papers and their math showing otherwise. ๐ And besides, the real goal isnโt to block ๐ฅ it, but to no longer be the ๐ low-hanging fruit. If everyone had to ๐ฅ pay some ๐ sats to post, ๐ the spammers ๐ number of posts ๐ค WILL be reduced. ๐ If ๐ the spammer can be ๐ฅ temporarily identified, ๐ the ๐ difficulty just ๐ for them can ๐ require a ๐ฏ higher cost to ๐ post. If ๐ฏ they canโt ๐ be ๐ identified, everyoneโs costs go ๐ up. Rinse, ๐ repeat ๐ until the ๐ฅ spammer finds a better target/platform/protocol. I will submit that ๐ฅ PoW is not a panacea ๐ and shouldnโt be used on its own, ๐ but itโs too ๐ powerful of a tool to ๐ฅ dismiss ๐ฅ with ๐ฏ such ๐ค obtuse statements. โMillionsโ of times before a ๐ฅ single phone ๐ฅ can run ๐ a PoW?
