 Maybe manufacturers are afraid of the "sticker shock" of diesel vs unleaded at the pump. 
 In Europe diesels are everywhere, a lot of them get like 50-70 mpg on the highway, you add in regenerative breaking and you should be able to get 40-50 even in stop-and-go city driving.

But diesel engines are a bit more costly than gasoline engines, so it might be that nobody wants to combine diesel cost with battery cost...
